(Are any of our readers travelling from Cape Town to Durban in the next month, and willing to help? Cecille is looking for somebody flying from Cape Town to Durban, who would be kind enough to help her transport her puppy - Mango Airlines don't transport puppies unless there is a passenger onboard who is responsible for them)
They say we should look beyond the Fifa World Cup. If, like me, you've been wondering when the rugby trinations matches start, then wonder no longer - the first South African match is against New Zealand on the 21st August. John, who hails from the North Sea island of Sotra, decided to visit our shores. After flying to Cape Town with the "Luftewaffe" ("encased in a very small German torture seat"), he made his way to Matjiesfontein where he had breakfast at the hotel which is in an "ongoing state of dilapidation". He met up with a heli-pilot who reminded him "that no matter how cool you think your life is, there is always people who have a more interesting time of it". Next he went to Sutherland which:
"has an impressive church and not much else".
"all those that we met in the Karoo are old, the young fled to the cites long ago"
"They are racists and they are bigoted, they are conservative and they are small minded. But they are also kind and welcoming to outsiders (I guess as long as you are white)"
"you can see that they were once beautiful but the harsh environment has abraded their looks as cruelly as it has weathered the bedrock we come to study."
And on Stellenbosch:
"there is a real sense of optimism. I guess it’s the kind of optimism you get from being rich and privileged and I am sure that if you spent time there it would drive you crazy"
