I feel sorry for anybody who still has to buy a plane ticket from London to Johannesburg towards the end of this year, as flight prices have gone through the roof. With the exception of Qatar Airways which marginally decreased their (already expensive) flight prices, every single airline has increased their airline tickets since the last survey.

Air France offers the best deal

Amongst all the very expensive flights, an Air France flight is the best deal - £630 for the following return flight from London to Johannesburg:

• Air France flight AF2471 leaves London Heathrow on the 16th December at 0640 and arrives in Paris de Gaulle at 0900. Air France flight AF994 then leaves Paris de Gaulle at 1005 and arrives in Johannesburg at 2130.

• Air France flight AF995 leaves Johannesburg at 2030 on the 16th January and arrives in Paris de Gaulle at 0600 the next day. Air France flight AF2670 leaves Paris de Gaulle at 0730 and arrives at London Heathrow at 0750.
