I often spend time at airports, and for me it's a chance to get my laptop out, log onto their wifi internet and catch up on work, whilst spending time at any one of a large number of restaurants (there is also an internet cafe).
At O.R. Tambo you could go shopping at duty free or buy some African souveniers at Out of Africa. There's a CNA & Exclusive Books where you can get the latest newspapers and magazines. If you like clothes shopping try Hugo Boss, Lacoste or the tie shop. Gadgets you can get at the Vodashop or Capi Photo Electronics. Stogies is excellent for gifts. Try Makgalas for jewellery. If you're feeling stressed, treat yourself to a massage at Letsema, go to the Prayer Room or even the Pharmacy.
In the UK an airport operator has announced it is to sell Edinburgh Airport as the Competition Commission's order that it must dispose of one of its Scottish hubs. This is the type of competition we should stoke in South Africa to keep airport taxes down (they're going up 161%). Government missed a huge opportunity when they dismissed Comair's attempt to purchase the old Durban International Airport.
The Purple shall rule! "I'm so disappointed. My son was due to fly from Cape Town to George leaving Cape Town at 16:45 and went to check in at 16:25 and they would not let him on the flight. It was flight SA8635 and he had a mishap while getting to the airport. I did not get a flexi ticket because it is too expensive. It is already very expensive to fly to George. The Bottom Line: I was reading about how Gloria Serobe of Wiphold was sending 100 employees to China "to learn how to operate a cement plant- and to be infected with the Chinese work ethic", "the workers at all levels would be exposed to more than the five hour day to which many had become accustomed". There's no secret to being successful, most people know that what's required is hard work and application - the Chinese certainly do - and if sending people to China's what's required for us to learn that lesson, then it's an expensive but worthwhile lesson, as it'll stand them in good stead for the rest of their lives (and their children will take notice too, and learn from it).
